NSLI-Y students on the academic year program in Russia were assigned a reflections project called The Four Seasons Photography Journal. Once each season, the students found a place in Kazan that was special to them, photographed it, and added their own commentary. The commentary could be poetic, incorporate rhyme, or simply state why they chose "their" special place, but, they needed to include both English and Russian text. The above photograph is an entry from the students' first season in Russia, and is the inspiration for the comment below:
I first came upon the Church of the Martyr Eudocia walking home with a friend after school. From the outside, it didn't look architecturally impressive nor was it intricately ornate, but somehow the church managed to capture my attention and soon my friend and I found ourselves already approaching the entrance gates. Inside the church, however, the walls were covered with beautiful golden Russian Orthodox portraits that quietly reflected the light from the candles surrounding them. Honestly, I was really glad to find such a peaceful place among the busy streets of Kazan, where I could relax and be at ease. Consequently, for its serenity and beauty, I decided to share this church with you as my favorite place in Kazan.
Идя с моим другом по дороге домой, я впервые попал в Храм Прмц. Евдокии Русской Православной Церкви. Наружная часть церкви выглядела не очень архитектурно впечатляюще и не очень изысканно, но она как-то захватила моё внимание и мы сразу подошли к воротам церкви. Однако во внутри церкви стены были увешены красивыми золотыми иконами, которые тихо отражали свет горящих свеч. Я был так рад, когда я нашёл такое спокойное место на шумных улицах Казани. Поэтому, за её спокойствие и красоту, я решил показать вам эту церковь, которая сейчас моё любимое место в Казани.

I like this picture because the scenery is beautiful. This road is near my house, and goes along the Kabanka river. When the weather is nice, I run on this road, and I watch all the colorful Tatar houses. I love this place because of the plentiful Tatar culture and the lake.

In Kazan, not far from the Kremlin, is this street, which leads to the Ministry of Agriculture. I chose this place, because here the hills are very beautiful - they are curved and wide. Also, the street shows the beauty of nature and the city.
В Казани, недалеко от Кремля, есть эта улица, что приводить к Министерству сельского хозяйства. Я выбрала это место, потому что вот холмы очень красивы - они изогнуты и широкими. Также, улица показывает красоту природы и города.

This is a spot I found while exploring the city during my first couple of days in Kazan. I had always admired Russian Orthodox church architecture, but never having been to Russia, this was the first authentic Russian Orthodox church I had ever seen. For this assignment, I decided to return to the same spot and record it. The picture was taken in late summer, and I look forward to seeing this church against different backdrops as the surrounding environment changes throughout the seasons.
Это место, которое я нашёл, пока я гулял в городе в течение первых нескольких дней. Я всегда любил архитектуру русских православных церквей но это был мой первый раз в России, поэтому это был первый раз когда я увидел настоящую русскую православную церковь. Поэтому я вернулся на это место, чтобы сфотографировать его. Я сделал этот снимок летом, и я жду момента, когда природа изменится вокруг церкви.
