A project completed by participants of the 2015-16 Russian Language Academic Year program in Chisinau, Moldova, implemented by American Councils
Throughout the month of December, NSLI-Y students on the 2015-16 Russian language academic year program in Chisinau, Moldova, implemented by American Councils, met and spoke with a variety of locals at numerous locations throughout the city. In order to capture the heart of the city and the opinions of her residents, snippets and descriptions of these conversations are captured below, along with pictures of those interviewed, or the pictures of the places they spoke about. The students hope that through the following photographs and quotes, you can come to understand Chisinau, and Moldova as a whole, as they now do – through the eyes of its people.
«Какое у вас самое лучшее воспоминание от работы Дедом мороза?»
«Работаю Дедом мороза 20 лет. Однажды я сфотографировался с новорожденным малышом, и потом через 6 лет я сфотографировался с тем же ребёнком в том же месте возле ёлки.»
«В Кишинёве есть много традиций во время зимних праздников. В центре города устраивают праздничную ярмарку, ставят новогоднюю ёлку, и вешают украшения. Вы даже можете увидеть Деда мороза по городу (он восточно-европейская новогодняя версия «Санты Клауса.»)
“What is your very best memory from working as Father Frost?”
“I have worked as Father Frost for 20 years. One time I took a photo with a newborn baby, and then 6 years later I once again took a photo with the same child in the same place in front of the tree."
In Chisinau there are many traditions at the time of the winter holidays. In the center of the city a holiday fair is built, a New Year’s tree is put up, and decorations are hung. You even can see Father Frost all around the city (he is the eastern European New Year’s version of Santa Claus.)

Эти две женщины долго осмотрели нас, пока мы думали купить ли что-то от них. Когда мы наконец-то решили, что мы купим яблоки, мы также спросили их, нравиться ли им эта работа. Одна из этих двух женщин, громко сказала, что хочет ли она делает это, ей надо. Она сказала, что, "я люблю мой город, не смотря на то, что в Кишиневе есть свои проблемы. Я просто не могу другую работу найти, но я не жалуюсь, потому что мне здесь комфортно." К тому же, её подруга сказала, что на рынках можно познакомиться с хорошими людьми и, что именно здесь они познакомились. Мы долго с ними говорили о жизни в Молдове и тогда пошли дальше.
These two women carefully observed us, as we decided whether or not we should buy something from them. When we finally came to the decision, that we would buy apples, we also decided to use this opportunity to ask them whether or not they enjoy their work. One of the two women loudly said, that whether she wants to or not, she has to work this job. She said that, “I love my city, not paying attention to all the problems in Chisinau. I just cannot find another job, but I am not complaining, because it is comfortable here.” In addition, her friend said that in the markets you can meet lots of good people, and that it was actually at this market that the two ladies met. We talked with them for a long time about life in Moldova and then went on our way.

Я подошёл к этой женщине на маленьком рынке, находящемся недалеко от центрального ринка на улице «Штефан сел Маре». Она привлекла моё внимание потому что, я услышал её, разговаривавшойся с свой дочке по русски, но дочка отвечала матери по английски. Я Спросил ее хорошо ли она знает английски язык. Она отозвалась мне, что она может понимать но не говорить, но она хочет, чтобы её дочка выучила английский язык. Дело в том, что продавец не хочет, чтобы дочка шла по следам своей матери и равотала на рынке, но нашла лучше работу за границей.Также оказалась, что иностранцы часто бывают на том рынке и помогает вести торговлю, если ты знаешь несколько слов по английски. Я попросил её, чтобы она мне рассказала об одном из своих самых любимых продаж. Она ответила:
«Однажды, иностранец подошёл ко мне с списком имен всех своих друзей. Он купил им всем эти «Я Люблю Молдову» рубашки - целых 30 рубашек. У меня едва ли было достаточно. Самая большая продажа в жизни.»
I approached the woman in this photo in a small side market not far from the central city market on Stefan Cel Mare. She attracted my attention because I heard her talking with her daughter in Russian, but the daughter was responding in English. I asked the woman if she knew English and she said that she could understand it but not speak it herself. She wanted her daughter to learn English so that she could find better work elsewhere, instead of just working in the market with her mother. It also turned out that foreigners often came to the market where the woman worked and it is very helpful for business to know a few English words. I asked her to tell me about one of her favorite sales that she has made. She said:
“One day, a foreigner came up to me with a list of the names of all his friends back home. He proceeded to buy an ‘I love Moldova’ t-shirt for every person on the list - 30 in total. I barely had enough to give him. It was the biggest sale of my life.”

«Хотя я живу в Кишиневе, я очень люблю проводить время в селе, особенно осенью. По моему мнению, настоящее сердце Молдовы находится в селе. Я очень хочу посетить США.»
«Что именно в США вы хотите посетить?»
«Я очень хочу ездить в Техас, чтобы видеть настоящую Американскую природу.»
Smokehouse BBQ является одним из самых популярных ресторанов в Кишиневе. Основанный несколько лет назад бывшими членами программы "Корпус Мира", Smokehouse BBQ дает жителям Кишинев возможность пробовать настоящие, домашние Американские блюда. Благодаря вкусной еде и уютной обстановке, этот ресторан известен среди и иностранцев и местных в Кишиневе. Когда мы там обедали, мы познакомились с женщиной, которая работает там официанткой.
"What do you like about Moldova most of all?" "Although I live in Chisinau, I really like spending time in the village, especially in the fall. In my opinion, the real heart of Moldova is found in the village. I really want to visit the U.S.A." "Where specifically in the U.S. do you want to visit?" "I really want to go to Texas, to see real American natural beauty."
Smokehouse BBQ is one of the most popular restaurants of Chisinau. Founded several years ago by several U.S. Peace Corps alumni, Smokehouse BBQ gives residents of Chisinau the opportunity to try real, home style, American dishes. Thanks to its tasty food and cozy atmosphere, the restaurant is famous among both locals and foreigners in Chisinau. When we ate lunch there, we met this woman, who works there as a waitress.

«Какие у вас мечти на будешее?»
«Я хотела бы переехать за границу. Может быть в Украйну, в Европу, или даже в Америку.»
Эта Женшина работает продавцом на рынке в Кишинёве. Она, как и многие Молдаване, работает на рынке чтобы зарабатывать деньги для семьи, но у неё большая мечта на счёт её будешего. Большая часть культуры в Кишинёве-это рынки. На рынках работают разные интересные люди, которые ищут своё место в жизни.
“What dreams do you have for the future?”
“I would like to move abroad. Maybe to Ukraine, to Europe, or maybe even to America.”
This woman works as a seller at a market in Chisinau. She, like many Moldovans, works at the market in order to earn money for her family, but she has bigger dreams for her future. A big part of the culture in Chisinau is the markets. Many interesting and different people work at these markets, all of whom are searching for their place in life.

Желая знать больше о жизни в Молдове, мы вязли несколько интервью у местных людей в парке. Одна женщина с коляской, родившаяся в Питере, прошла мимо нас и поэтому, мы начали её спросить несколько вопросов. Сначала, мы спросили нравиться ли ей жить на её районе и почему. Задумавшись, она ответила, что, «Рышкановка, на мой взгляд, самый лучший район для меня, благодаря тому, что здесь все новое и есть очень красивые парки, в которых можно погулять с ребенком.» она продолжала и сказала нам, что в будущем она хочет вернуться в Санкт-Петербург, потому что её родственники там и это её родной город, но она добавила, что пока еще для нее жизнь здесь хватает.
Wanting to know more about life in Moldova, we took a few interviews from locals in a park. One woman with a stroller, born in Petersburg, came near us, so we decided to ask her a few questions. Firstly, we asked her if she liked the neighborhood she lives in and why. Thinking hard, she told us that, “Rhyshkanovka, in her opinion, is the best neighborhood for her, thanks to the fact that everything is new and there are really pretty parks, where she can walk with her child in.” She continued and told us, that in the future she hopes to return to her native city, St. Petersburg, where all over her family lives, but also added that for now life here was sufficient for her.

Этот мужчина, по имени Александр, работает с рыбами в центре по исскуству на ботанике. Мы с двумя другыми студентами приходим к нему по пятницам и понидельникам, чтобы помогать ему чистить аквариумы, кормить рыб, и т.д. Я принял решение взять интервю у него потому что он представляет среднего молдована. Многие здесь имеют, вместе с своей профессией, маленькие должности и работу, которие помогают молдованам зарабатывать. Хорошим примером этого является Алехандр.
Я спросил его как он попал в такую работу, почему ему нравится работать с рыбами, и удовлетворяется ли он своей работой. Он сказал, что он работает с рыбами потому что с детства они ему нравятся. Ему всегда приятно проводить время с животными какого-нибудь вида. Ему нравится работа в том, что это даёт ему деньги. Также его жена работает в одинаковом центре и поэтому он может проводить время с ней и работать с рыбами. Работа удовлетворяет его. Ему повезло, что может и зарабатывать и расслабляться и наслаждаться одновременно.
This man, named Alexander, works with fish at a center for art and culture in the region of Botanica. Every Monday and Friday along with two other NSLI-Y students I help Alexander clean aquariums, feed the fish, and other similar activities. I decided to interview Alexander because he represents an average Moldovan worker. Many here along with their main job, have smaller responsibilities and side-jobs that help them earn extra money. Alexander and his fish are a good example of this.
I asked him how he ended up in his current line of work, whether or not he enjoys his work, and if he is satisfied with his current position. He said that he works with fish because he’s very good with animals. From the beginning the fish just liked him. The same is true for other types of animals. He likes his job in that it allows him to make a little more money. His wife also works at the same center, so the extra work doesn’t take him away from her. He considers himself lucky that he can earn money while at the same time enjoying himself and relaxing with creatures he loves.

Не зная куда нам идти, мы подошли к этому человеку, чтобы выяснить в какую сторону мы должны пойти. Ввиду этого, он обрадовался нашим акцентам и хотел узнать откуда мы. Мы начали говорить с ним и решили спросить его, почему ему нравиться жизнь в Молдове. Он нам объяснил, что: «только в Молдове есть такая изумительная культура и гостеприимные жители.» Более того, Он сказал, что Молдова выступает перекрестком между многими культурами и, благодаря этому люди очень разнообразные.
Not knowing where to go, we approached this man to clear up, which path we should take. Due to this, he was intrigued by our accents and began a conversation by asking where we are from. We started to talk to him and decided that we should ask him why he enjoys life in Moldova. He explained, “Only in Moldova are there such an amazing culture and hospitable locals.” Moreover, he said that Moldova is a crossroads between many cultures and thanks to this, Moldovans are so diverse.

«Нет, я родился в Ленинграде, который сейчас Санкт Петербург. 30 лет назад я поехал в Кишинёв на медицинскую конференцию, и с тех пор живу здесь. Сейчас мне 94 года.»
Мы встретили этого мужчину в парке Кишинёва. В Кишинёве есть множество парков, в которых дети играют, молодёжь встречается и проводит время друг с другом, семьи собираются, и пенсионеры сидят и отдыхают. Парки невероятно красивы,они являются одной из лучших достопримечательностей города, и они всегда полны добрых людей Кишинёва!
“Did you live your whole life in Moldova?”
“No, I was born in Leningrad, which is now Saint Petersburg. Thirty years ago I came to Chisinau for a medicine conference and have lived here since. I am now 94 years old.”
We met this man in a park in Chisinau. In Chisinau there are many parks, in which children play, young people meet and spend time together, families gather, and pensioners sit and relax. The parks are incredibly beautiful and are one of the best parts of the city and are always filled with the kind people of Chisinau!

Этот человек работает в Новогоднем городке, который сейчас находится вокруг Арки Победы. В этом городке можно покупать разные традиционные Молдавские зимние блюда и напитки. Арка была построена в 1840 году в чести победы Российской Империи в Русско-Турецкой Войне 1829 года. Сегодня она считается одним символом города.
What place in Chisinau is your favorite?"
"This arch, because it's very beautiful."
This person works in the New Year’s market, which now stands around the Victory Arch. In this market, you can buy various traditional Moldovan winter dishes and beverages. The Arch was built in 1840 in honor of the victory of the Russian Empire in the Russo-Turkish war of 1829. Today it is considered a symbol of the city.
