Every NSLI-Y experience is different, so every NSLI-Y breakfast will look different, even within the same country. Five NSLI-Y students share their typical breakfast on-program.
From Carson Krueger, a 2024 Arabic Summer alum who studied in Jordan: This is a very traditional Jordanian/ Middle Eastern breakfast spread that includes falafel, bread, hummus, and tea!
From Kaitlynn Ng, a 2023-2024 Chinese Academic Year alum who studied in Taiwan: A typical breakfast for me includes toast with jam, a hard boiled egg, and soy milk. I usually have some form of bread (toast, steamed buns, or breads from bakeries). Some drinks I often have are water, soy milk, apple juice, or cranberry juice.
From Sophie Cao, a 2024 Russian Summer alum who studied in Kyrgyzstan: My typical breakfast is blini with sour cream and bread. The bread usually either goes with honey — bought from the bazaars or given to us by host family relatives from the south — or cheese and sausage.
From Shawn Chew, a 2023-2024 Korean Academic Year alum who studied in South Korea: 팥죽 (Pat-juk) - Red Bean Rice Porridge is a Korean dish normally consumed for breakfast or lunch, and especially in the colder months. It is also used in Korea as a remedy for a cold or stomach ache. There are several flavors of 죽 (juk) - rice porridge, but one of the popular flavors included red beans which are rich in nutrients and give the dish a delicious hearty flavor.
From Noam White, a 2024 Arabic Summer alum who studied in Morocco: The typical breakfast for me and my roommate was msemmen and this oatmeal-like soup. Of course, it was all delicious.
