Trip to South Morocco and the Sahara

NSLI-Y Morocco students took a trip to Southern Morocco and the Sahara. They went on a four-hour walk through the mountains and the gorge. They left for Zagora, driving through Kelaa Mgouna and visiting a Kasbah overlooking the Oued Draa, the grove of date palms. Then on to the ancient city of Tamgroute to visit their zawiya, ancient library, and tour the traditional pottery making facility.  Following that, students rode camels out to the  desert dunes, listened to Saharoui music by campfire, and stargazed. The next morning, they left by camel to drive back to Zagora. On the way home, they stopped at a small village that was known for its Jewish-style metallurgy. They visited the metalworkers and a very old mosque as well as a synagogue and the mellah, the old Jewish part of the small village.
