NSLI-Y Russia alumnus and recent graduate of Texas A&M Matthew Petty was highlighted in an article by Texas A&M Today for his achievement in receiving the coveted Fulbright English Teaching Assisting (ETA) Scholarship to teach English in Tajikistan.

On the NSLI-Y scholarship, Matthew worked as an ESL volunteer at the American Center and in a local school in Kazan, Russia. He was able to return to Russia as a college student on a Benjamin Gilman Study Abroad scholarship. Matthew's experiences "allowed him to realize that his interest in teaching and Soviet culture could lead to a career in linguistics, English language instruction, and curriculum development."
