Chapter 4: Korean Host Family on Returning Back to Korea Post U.S. Trip, and Reflections
What do you miss about the U.S.?
미국의 어떤 점이 그리운가요?
Response 1: The thing I miss the most is the Hanover green and campus. Every morning we went to the Co-op to go grocery shopping and I miss the forest road by which we walked. Because there is barely any flat land in Korea, the grass lawns were nice. I also miss the delicious yogurt and bread.
2: I miss the nature in pretty New Hampshire. Places with lots of grass and trees.
3: The things that I miss from the U.S. are the clean environment of Hanover where we would take walks with Millie (Alexi’s dog), the delicious dinners we would eat with the family, and when I would open my eyes in the morning and see the space outside through the window.
대답 1: 제일 그리운 것은 하노버의 푸른 교정이에요. 한국에는 잔디로 된 평지가 별로 없어서 아침마다 Coop으로 장을 보러 갈 때 걸었던 숲길이 그리워요. 맛있는 요거트랑 빵도 그립네요.
2: 햄프셔의 멋진 자연이 그리워요. 잔디가 많고 나무들이 푸르른 곳!
3: 미국생활에서 그리운 것은 하노버 청정지역에서 밀리와 산책하는 것, 가족들과 맛있는 저녁밥 먹는 것, 아침에 눈을 떴을 때 창문을 통해 보이던 풍경들이에요.
If possible would you want to lead your daily life differently, after your American experience?
미국에서의 경험을 토대로 일상 생활을 다르게 바꿔보고 싶은 부분이 있나요?
Response 1: I think eating yogurt in the morning would be good since it is simple and also healthy. Also, later if I have kids I will encourage them to exercise/pursue hobbies like the American kids.
2: The influences that I received in the U.S… Originally I never even thought about wanting to go study abroad, but after going to the U.S. I began thinking about wanting to study abroad.
3: Even though the air in Seoul is not great, I would like to take walks everyday after dinner for family health.
대답 1: 아침식사로 요거트를 먹는 것이 간편하고 건강에도 좋은 것 같다고 생각했어요. 또 나중에 자식을 낳는 다면 미국의 아이들처럼 운동을 많이 시켜주고 싶어요.
2: 미국에서 영향을 받은 것은, 이전에는 외국에서 공부하고 싶다는 생각을 한 번도 한적이 없었는데, 미국에 다녀 오고 나서 외국에서 공부를 해보고 싶다는 생각이 들었다는 거에요.
3: 서울 공기가 하노버만큼 좋지는 않지만 가족들의 건강을 위해서 매일 저녁 산책을 하고 싶어요.
Before going to the U.S. how did you study English? How long did you study English? Why did you study? Do you have plans to continue English studies in the future?
미국에 가기 전에 영어를 어떻게, 얼마나, 왜 공부했어요? 그리고 앞으로도 계속 영어 공부를 할건가요?
Response 1: I started when I was in 3rd grade of elementary school, so I have studied for 24 years. During middle and high school, I learned at school, but instead of attending English hagwon (private tutoring school) I listened to lectures online. I studied mainly vocabulary needed for tests, grammar, reading, and listening. During high school I attended an english vocabulary class and memorized the vocabulary. As we listened to English recordings or conversations we had to transcribe what we heard. Upon entering university I only studied English about 1-2 times per month as I prepared for the TOEIC (Test of English for International Communication).
I studied English so I could enter into a college. Once in college I studied English so that I could get certain qualification cards. In Korea, having an english qualification in something is not only helpful and good for jobs, but also for participating in certain programs. Because only experiencing life in Korea is not satisfying, I want to learn English so I can gain international experience. After returning from America, I want to diligently study English so in the future I can travel to other countries and make foreigner friends there.
2: Before going to America I only studied English at school in order to pass the Korean SAT. I started in elementary school, but really began appropriately learning with a structure in middle school. Since it is hard to just study English for tests, I have thoughts that I want to learn speaking English that I can use in real life situations.
대답 1: 초등학교 3학년 때부터 했으니까 24년정도 되었네요. 중학교 고등학교 때는 학교에서 배웠고, 영어 학원은 따로 다니지 않고 인터넷 강의를 들었습니다. 시험 유형에 맞추어 단어, 문법, 읽기, 듣기 위주로 공부했습니다. 고등학교 때는 영어단어장을 들고 다니며 단어를 외웠고, 영어 듣기하면서 받아쓰기도 했었습니다. 대학교 들어가고 나서는 토익 시험 준비할 때만 1~2달 씩 공부했습니다. 왜 공부했냐고 물으면 중고등학생 때는 대학에 들어가기 위해 공부했고, 대학교 때는 자격증을 위해 공부했습니다. 한국에서는 영어 자격증이 비단 취업 뿐만 아니라 프로그램에 참여하기 위한 좋은 조건이라서요. 저는 한국 안에서 만의 경험으로는 만족하지 않기 때문에, 국제적인 경험을 쌓고 싶어 영어 공부를 했었습니다. 미국에 다녀온 지금은 앞으로 다른 나라 여행을 다니고, 외국 친구를 사귀기 위해서 영어 공부를 열심히 하고 싶습니다.
2: 미국 가기전에는 한국 학교에서 수능을 보기 위해 배우는 문법 위주의 영어를 공부했어요. 초등학교때 영어공부를 시작하긴 했지만 제대로 배운건 중학교때부터에요. 하지만 시험을 위해서만 영어를 공부하기 보다는 앞으로는 실생활에서 쓸수 있는 회화 공부를 하고싶어요.
