What Can I Say About Moscow?

Madison was a participant on the Russian summer program in 2017. I’ve had a lot of time to reflect – and talk– about the experiences I have had and the things I have learned over the summer. As with any intensive and unique experience, it is quite difficult to explain to “outsiders” exactly what my summer was “like.” It was incredible. It was hard, I tell them. A lot of homework, meetings, and endless adventures with my fellow American peers. I was always doing something. I made new lifelong friends, bothRead More

Alumni Spotlight: John

John is from West Branch, IA and participated in the 2017-2018 Russian AY program in Moldova. When John first stumbled across the NSLI-Y program, he assumed that it wasn’t for him. He had never left the country, so he thought a year abroad would be impossible. However, his interest in Russian culture and desire to dispel negative media portrayal of the country led him to give the application a try. It was as he was writing his essays that he really began to grasp what NSLI-Y entailed and how heRead More

Alumni Spotlight: Andrew

After spending a transformative summer in Xian, China on the NSLI-Y program, Andrew Leonard arrived home to his New Hampshire school district that sadly did not offer Chinese courses as a foreign language option. Andrew, like many other young Americans, looked for more language options at home. First, Andrew tried online courses; “I enjoyed learning Mandarin so much during my summer NSLI-Y program in Xi’an that I looked for virtual options back home. However, online options were not as interactive and immersive as I was used to in China. I knewRead More

Love of Arabic

Wafae Baghnaoui, an NSLI-Y language partner and journalism student in Rabat, Morocco created a video on the 2017-2018 NSLI-Y Academic Year program in Rabat. Alumni Spotlight: Allan

Allan is from Burke, VA and participated in the Arabic program in Morocco. At school, Allan sat next to a girl from Morocco and learned about the diversity and beauty of her country. Yet every day when he got home to watch the news, he noticed that any mention of countries like Morocco was passed up for images of war, violence, and extremism in other parts of the Middle East and North Africa (MENA) region. This desire to hear about Middle Eastern politics from a local perspective and to delveRead More

Taipei Speech Competition

Scott is from Los Angeles, CA and is participating in the 2017-18 Taiwan academic year program. Taipei Speech Competition On the weekend of 11/03, I participated in this year’s (2017) “Taipei Mandarin Language Speech Competition” in Taipei City. My host institution, Wenzao Foreign Language University, allowed three classmates and I–three out of the four of us were NSLI-Y students–to compete (we had also all previously participated in Wenzao’s own speech competition). We all worked really hard and spent a lotRead More

The Experience of a Lifetime

Gillian is from Boalsburg, PA and participated in the Russia Summer 2017 program. My NSLI-Y journey began in New York City as I boarded a plane to Russia with twelve other amazing participants. Leaving behind a city I had gotten to know over the course of three weeks, and walking onto a plane departing for Moscow was daunting. This wasn’t my first trip abroad, and I was desperately trying to conjure up information from my past experiences but nothing could have prepared me for the life-changing opportunity I was aboutRead More
Opening slide introducing presentation
On February 12th, current academic year students in Moldova discussed how NSLI-Y has helped them develop not only their Russian language skills but their leadership skills as well. Following the presentation, audience members were invited to engage with the speakers during the live Q&A session. This event is a great opportunity to learn more about the impact of a study abroad program like NSLI-Y. We invite you to watch the recording of this insightful event. Click here to watch the Q&A. They each spent a summer abroad with NSLI-Y: Rahul studied Chinese in Shanghai, China over the summer of 2016; and Rohan studied Arabic during the summer of 2017 in Rabat, Morocco. Though they spent their time on program on different continents, both share a passion for outreach and are actively advocating for NSLI-Y.Read More
