Visit to Local Nursing Home

On Thursday, August 1, 2013, students in Deyang visited a retirement home, where they spent the afternoon interacting with the residents who lived there. First, the students sang two songs in Chinese to the delight of the audience, and then they asked the residents questions about their lives using the Chinese language skills they’ve acquired throughout the six-week program. Volunteering at a Local Orphanage

The NSLI-Y program provides a number of opportunities for the students to contribute to the local community via community service projects. One day after class sessions, NSLI-Y students in Tajikistan pooled some of their own money to purchase yogurt, cookies, and diapers to take to a local orphanage. The orphanage houses newborn children through 8 year olds, and also takes care of children with physical disabilities. Community Clean-Up

On July 20th, 2014, NSLI-Y students braved the heat, donned protective gloves, and took an active part in improving their host community by collecting garbage and bottles at Spartak Children’s Park in Dushanbe, Tajikistan. They were joined by alumni from the FLEX (Future Leaders Exchange) program, who also lent a hand in the clean-up. Service Activities with Education NGO in India

NSLI-Y students in India took part in a community service visit at an NGO called “Vidya and Child,” which works to close the education gap for children belonging to the underprivileged section of society. NSLI-Y students and their host siblings visited the NGO and engaged in activities such as storytelling, playing games and teaching poems to the children at the NGO. The children taught the NSLI-Y students Hindi poems and dances. Storytelling to Kindergarteners in Korea

In addition to academic studies, NSLI-Y students participate in a variety of extracurricular activities, from music lessons to cooking classes.  For students in the storytelling class, their extracurricular activity took them all the way back to Kindergarten!
